OIL PASTELS

Students will discover a variety of new drawing techniques such as stippling, burnishing, scumbling, layering, shading, incised and directional marks, optical blending, pressure, cross hatching, warm and cool colors and color blending. We will also touch on tone, form, composition, color theory, tools, papers and products. Applying their new information with the medium, students are challenged with various art projects such as abstract, still life, drawing in nature, using only primary or complementary colors, empty space, warm and cool colors, silhouette, and more. At the end of class we will have group discussion and evaluation of techniques as we review everyone’s work. This is a great opportunity for beginners or seasoned artists! 


BEGINNING DRAWING

Did you ever want to learn to draw, improve the art work you are already doing or just have a place to practice? Then a Beginning Drawing class is just for you!During this coursework we learn about shading, toning, perspective, composition, layout, proportion, sketching, line work, realistic and abstract, draw what you see, 2D vs 3D artwork and drawing techniques such crosshatching and directional lines.We will draw using charcoal and soft lead pencils, and talk about the tools, papers and products used to make great art! Applying their new information with the medium, students are challenged with various art projects.   At the end of class we will have group discussion and evaluation of techniques as we review everyone’s work. This is a great opportunity for beginners or seasoned artists! 


PEN & INK

Join us for a fun and easy workshop as we explore the wonders of drawing with Pen and Ink! Students will learn how to create beautiful drawings using a variety of techniques such as dry brush, ink wash, stippling, splatter, cross hatching, contour and linear lines, and scrumbling, We will touch on tone, form, composition, tools, papers and products. Students will develop a better understanding of different pen quills and brushes used with pen & ink drawing. Applying their new information with the medium, students are challenged with various art projects such as doodling, abstract and classic drawings using pens and brushes. At the end of class we will have group discussion and evaluation of techniques as we review everyone’s work. This is a great opportunity for beginners or seasoned artists! 


COLORED INK 

Join us for a fun and easy workshop as we explore the wonders of drawing and painting with Colored Ink! Students will learn how to create beautiful drawings using a variety of techniques such as manipulating colored ink with paint, water and alcohol, brush work, ink washes, and layering of color. We will touch on color theory, tone, form, composition, tools, papers and products. After practice, there will be time to finish 1-2 drawings. At the end of class we will have group discussion and evaluation of techniques as we review everyone’s work. This is a great opportunity for beginners or seasoned artists! 

COLORED PENCILS
Learn how to make beautiful drawings using the comfort of a pencil and not a brush by joining us for a fun and easy workshop using Colored Pencils! Students will discover a variety of new drawing techniques such as stippling, burnishing, scumbling, layering, shading, incised and directional marks, optical blending, pressure, cross hatching, warm and cool colors and color blending. We will also touch on tone, form, composition, color theory, tools, papers and products. WATERCOLOR COLORED PENCILS

Take your next step with colored pencils as we learn how to use Watercolor (water soluble) Colored Pencils! Students will learn a variety of new drawing techniques such as cross hatching, pencil pressure, brush strokes and directional lines. Using a brush and water to create a colorful wash, students build up layers of color to create a "watercolor" effect or a bolder, more detailed drawing. We will also touch on tone, form, composition, color theory, tools, papers and products. Applying their new information with the medium, students are challenged with various art projects. At the end of class we will have group discussion and evaluation of techniques as we review everyone’s work. This is a great opportunity for beginners or seasoned artists! 


CHARCOAL 

Join us for a fun and easy workshop as we explore the wonders of drawing with charcoal! Students will learn blending techniques and how to create beautiful drawings using a variety of papers and charcoal (including vine, white charcoal, compressed and pencil). We will touch on tone, form, composition, tools, papers and products. Applying their new information with the medium, students are challenged with various art projects such as the subtractive method, tonal values, gradating tones, highlights and contrasting. At the end of class we will have group discussion and evaluation of techniques as we review everyone’s work. This is a great opportunity for beginners or seasoned artists!


COLORED CONTE' STICKS
Ready to learn a new art medium? Learn how to make bold and detailed colored drawings using Conte’ sticks! This workshop introduces the student to the tools and techniques of Conte’, such as pressure, toning and color layering.  We will touch on tone, form, composition, tools, papers and products. Applying their new information with the medium, students are challenged with various art projects. At the end of class we will have group discussion and evaluation of techniques as we review everyone’s work. This is a great opportunity for beginners or seasoned artists!

CHALK PASTELS

CARTOONING AND COMIC STRIPS (Shorter version of this class is "Cookies and Cartoons)
Are you someone who has always loved cartoons and appreciated the art form? Join us for a fun workshop on cartooning and character development! This course is designed for children, teens and families. Students will learn how to show expression through drawing cartoon faces and bodies. To make their artwork more pleasing and dynamic, students will also discover how to add patterns and textures to their characters and background composition. We will touch on the tools and techniques for drawing comic strips and comic book pages, inking, coloring and character and gag development. Using their new information, students will develop and draw their own characters and create a comic strip. At the end of class we will have group discussion and evaluation of techniques as we review everyone’s work. This is a great opportunity for beginners or seasoned artists! 


COOKIES AND CARTOONS

Join us for a fun workshop on cartooning and character development! This course is designed for children, teens and families, and there are free cookies to enjoy during class! Students will learn how to draw expressive cartoon faces and bodies, and how to animate people, animals and objects using shapes. To make their artwork more pleasing and dynamic, students will also discover how to add patterns and textures to their characters and background composition. Using their new information, students will develop, draw and color their own characters. All supplies are included! This is a great opportunity for Family Fun! 

STOP MOTION ANIMATION WITH ELECTRONIC DEVICES

Stop-motion cartoons and videos (like Wallace and Gromit Claymation) are the newest craze, as seen on YouTube and many TV commercials. This art-based course introduces students to concepts such as set design and composition as they create and direct their own stop-motion films using free apps downloaded to a smartphone or tablet. Working in groups, students will create a film using clay, LEGOS and other art materials. Students will also learn the history of animation, animation techniques, as well as set design, film angles, and character and storyline development. We will discuss how to use power-point and some movie applications (such as I-Movie) to create sounds and special effects for stop-motion videos. We will also review and critique stop-motion commercials, independent stop-motion and award winning stop-motion videos. This course requires a device with a camera and the ability to download free apps (i.e. iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android, etc.) and must be brought to class each day. Students will work in groups when designing, creating and filming. If a student does not have access to the apps, they can still take the class and share with the group.


ANIME & MANGA STYLE CARTOONING WITH COMIC BOOK CONSTRUCTION

Anime is a popular form of cartooning and animation that originated in Japanese manga (comic books).  This course provides the student with an introduction to the basic principles, terminology, techniques and concepts used in anime and manga-style cartooning and animation. Emphasis is given to comic book page layout, along with Anime/Manga character development. Instruction includes drawing bodies, perspective, composition, fore-shortening, hair, weapons, fight shots, feet and hands, heads and faces, facial expressions, clothing, jewelry, and more. 


COLOR THEROY

Historical and new age artists alike use the hidden secrets of color to create dynamic drawings! Join us as we unlock these secrets using colored pencils and pastels. Students will discover a variety of new drawing techniques such as stippling, burnishing, layering and color blending while applying them to several quick, short-term, and extended drawings. Students will draw a variety of pictures, including still life, abstract, cartoons and children's book style pictures. At the end of each class meeting, students will evaluate and discuss techniques while reviewing each other’s work. The color wheel will be introduced as students learn about primary, complementary, and tertiary colors, warm vs. cool, tints, shades, tone and color schemes. In class, we will review works from famous artists and discuss their use of color and drawing style. Students will add dimension to their drawings using the effects of composition, shading, line, form and texture while practicing the techniques of colored pencils and pastels. Methods learned in this class can be applied to fine art, children’s books, abstract art and cartooning.


CARTOONING AS ANIMATION

Animation gives the illusion of movement to a still drawing.  This course does not cover computer animation, but rather builds a foundation of animation terminology, techniques and concepts through artwork, lecture and college level reading material.  Students will gain a good knowledge of the basic principles of animation as developed by Walt Disney and Warner Brothers animation artists. The class also touches on the history of cartooning and animation artists.  There is emphasis on storyboarding, character development, and animation jobs and responsibilities. This is a hands-on class as students design a flipbook, Zoetrope and other mechanical cinemas to apply their new knowledge of animation.  This course is designed for anyone with a sense of humor and a moderate talent with drawing. 


PORTRAIT AND FIGURE DRAWING

For the beginning student, this workshop covers facial and body proportions and sketching with techniques such as stippling, directional marks, cross hatching, shading and stumbling. Using charcoal and soft pencils, students are challenged with a variety of quick and extended art projects. At the end of class we will have group discussion and evaluation of techniques as we review everyone’s work. This is a great opportunity for beginners or seasoned artists! 


CREATE YOUR OWN MANDALA 

This is a workshop not just for art but also self discovery. Students are challenged with projects that provide insight and clarity regarding their life issues and goals, before creating beautiful and colorful personal mandalas to reflect what they have learned about themselves. This is a safe place for expression, and if  you choose, there is time set aside for sharing.
